Why Do The Nations Rage!

The Nations and Israel:

Prayer when done according to the will of God, accomplishes great things, but when done outside of His will accomplishes nothing. Thus, when Christians pray for the peace of Jerusalem, they are out of the will of the Lord because He never commanded us to do this.

Yes, there is a verse in our English Bible versions, Psa 122:6, that reads: "Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: may they prosper who love you," but that is a very bad translation of the Hebrew text. I am not looking to start a holy war, and I do not want to be caught in the cross-fire by touching one of the most oft-quoted verses in the Scriptures. But pray for the peace of Jerusalem is a verse that has so much become part of "Church tradition," that no one Bible manufacturer would dare to change it even if they knew the correct way to translate it!

There is nothing wrong with the latter part of the verse, "may they prosper who love you;" it is totally kosher. But the first portion in Hebrew is: "Shalu Shlom Yerushalayim."

The Hebrew word shalu comes from the verb sha-al and should never, never be translated as "pray;" Of the 168 occurrences in the Hebrew Scriptures, the early scholars chose only this verse in Psa 122 to translate sha-al as "pray;" In every other instance they translated sha-al correctly: "ask," "enquire," "request," "salute" (greet), etc.

On the other hand, the Hebrew word for "pray is the verb palal, and in each of the 83 instances where it occurs in the Hebrew Scriptures, it is translated correctly as "pray," "interced" (in prayer) or "supplicate" (in prayer).

The verse in Psa 122 should therefore, read: Salute Jerusalem: may they prosper who love you. If the reader desires to pray for the peace of Jerusalem, he would be better advised to pray John's prayer at the end of Revelation: "Even so, come, Yeshua!"

Peace can only come to Jerusalem after Messiah comes to reign in His City - the City of the Great KIng (Psa 48:2). Since Jerusalem is to be the scene of judgement for many nations and must experience much, much more bloodshed before Messiah comes, we should pray the Lord that "in judgement, He remembers mercy" (Hab 3:2).

Replacement Theology

Some have the idea that Israel lost its "chosen" status, when they as a nation did not accept Yeshua as their long promised Messiah. These Christians apply all prophetic scriptures about Israel to themselves, hence, "replacement theology." However, the Apostle warns against such a mistake, "For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles be come in. And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Zion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins. As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers' sakes . . . these also now believed not, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy." Rom. 11:25-32
